Maintenance and Your Mercury Warranty: What You Need to Know

We hear this question a lot – Do I have to have my maintenance done by a dealer in order to prevent “voiding” my engine warranty?

The short answer is “NO”. But, here are the details which could come into consideration. Your Mercury Marine engine warranty assures that the engine is free of defects in materials and workmanship during the warranty period. Any engine failure gets evaluated on its own merits. If the failure is in no way related to maintenance, then Mercury will not be concerned with maintenance records. However, if there are indications the failure was caused by, or related to, a lack of proper maintenance; Mercury may require proof that proper maintenance was performed in accordance with its published maintenance schedule for the engine. If we performed the maintenance, we’ll have and provide the records to Mercury. If you performed your own maintenance, you will need to produce “proof of purchase” of the appropriate parts at dates matching the maintenance schedule. You should only use genuine Mercury parts and lubes to ensure the correct specifications are met. When you purchase these items from Boat City USA under your customer name, we will have a permanent record of “proof of purchase” for you.

So, be sure to keep up with your maintenance — to protect your warranty, your investment and to help ensure years of reliable performance.
